Employer connections

Expert guests from working life (Forestry organizations, Game Center, Natural Resources Center in Finland, local hunters, game project experts), their lectures, materials and the terrain sites in a field day they present.

Exam schedules

The course is organized once a year in the autumn. There is no exam in the course, but the course involves writing a learning diary covering the entire course content based on expert lectures, a field day, the Game Centre and other assigned learning materials found in Moodle. The student compiles the things he or she has learned during the course into a written form according to the instructions given for the final project at the university of applied sciences. There are 3 deadlines for returning the learning diary: 1. immediately after the end of the course lectures before Christmas, 2. immediately after the turn of the next year and 3. in January at the beginning of the new academic year. The course ends after the 3rd return and the student is welcome to complete the next implementation the following autumn.

International connections

The course is offered in both Finnish and English in the same implementation. All Finnish-language material is intended for Finnish students and, correspondingly, English-language material is intended for international students whose native language is something else than Finnish. Not all materials are the same due to the language. The field day is the same for everyone regardless of language. Interpretation on site. Some of the lectures are held in Finnish and some in English. More detailed information about them is provided in the introductory lecture at the beginning of the course. The material packages are in Finnish and English, depending on the language.

Completion alternatives

It is possible to complete the course completely independently, as the materials and recordings of the lectures are available in the course's Moodle. The student organizes the independent field day on his/her own, if he/she does not participate in the day led by Metsähallitus experts in Rovaniemi. The field day program and content are available in the Moodle workspace.

Evaluation methods and criteria

The assessment of the course is based on the student's learning diary written for the entire course and all aspects of the course, taking into account the field day, lectures and study materials. The learning diary is assessed on a scale of 0–5.

Student workload

Corresponds to 5 credits, i.e. 135h: - a field day in Rovaniemi or an independent field day arranged by a student his/herself 8h - expert lectures in English 2-3*3h= 6-9h - independent studying, material in Moodle in English 70h - writing a course learning diary according to final exam formula 50h

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

5: The content is extensive, the treatment of themes is commendable, considering all aspects of the course (field, lectures, materials), the contribution of one's own thinking is clearly visible, and the written output is interesting and well done.

Teaching methods

Further information

The minimum requirement for the course is a hunter's qualification or forestry studies (basics). As its name suggests, the course is "special questions" and provides in-depth studies in game management, and requires basic knowledge of game ecology and forest management. The course includes an expert-led field day in Rovaniemi or a field day organized by the student his/herself, for example at work site (Assessment Passed/Failed).
