Location and time
The course is fully virtual: there are no contact or online lessons. The Moodle platform is open 25.8. - 7.12.2025. This is a non-stop course, meaning that you can enroll into the course November, 7 at the latest. You need to complete the course by November, 30, 2025.
Materials
The materials are on Moodle. Please note that the learning platform is Metropolia's Moodle with HAKA login. You will get further instructions by email after you have been accepted into the course.
International connections
The course is offered to international degree students, especially for those who have just arrived or are about to arrive to Finland in order to start their studies in UAS.
Evaluation methods and criteria
The final grading is on a scale: pass/fail. In order to receive a passing grade the student should 1) get 70 % of points of the H5P tasks 2) participate in all of the discussion tasks 3) do the final task 4) fill in the mandatory course feedback form
Content scheduling
Having completed the course, you will for example be familiar with * how Finnish and Swedish languages are visible in the capital region * how to spend your spare time in Finland * why Finns do ice swimming, take sauna bathing and go to the forest with buckets in autumn This course will also give you * a survival kit for daily life in Finland * some Finnish and Swedish phrases * basic information about history, culture, people and geography of Finland
Teaching methods
The course form is a fully independent online course. The Moodle learning environment is built around 15 different sections (tram stops) containing information and tasks about Finnish culture and manners, the Finnish language and the Swedish language. Each topic has tasks about the content of the learning material. There are also discussion forums where students share their observations and views of the topic in question. In the final task students apply the content of the course to a presentation of their home countries.
Further information
This course is designed by 3AMK (3UAS) and especially meant for the international students of Haaga-Helia, Laurea and Metropolia (3AMK). However, it is possible to attend even though you study in Finnish-speaking degree program or want to participate through open UAS.
