Objective

- Students can explain the impact of different factors to the energy use of a building. They understand the principles of local solar energy production and use.
- Students can produce the energy efficiency documentation required in the building permit process.
- Students can use dynamic simulation tools to calculate the indoor environment, energy use and cooling load of a building. They master measures to prevent overheating during the summer.
- Students are able to make life cycle calculation to support decision making and assess the environmental impact during the life cycle of a building. They can explain the role of use and maintenance on the energy economy of a building.
- Students can explain the principles and modes of heat transfer and apply them in heat transfer calculations of structures heaters. They can explain how moisture transfers in structures and soil.
- Students can explain the principles of sound and apply them in noise calculations of HVAC systems.

Content

1. Energy- and LCC-Calculation: Factors of energy efficiency, laws and statutes regulating the energy efficiency of buildings, calculation of indoor environment and energy use using dynamic simulation tools and life cycle calculation and life cycle assessment.

2. Energy efficient maintenance and renovation

3. Local energy production and connection to smart energy grid

4. Mathematics

5. Thermodynamics and building physics: Properties of structures and materials. Heat transfer of plane wall and cylinder, thermal resistance and overall heat transfer coefficient, temperature distribution in a multilayered plane wall, convection, radiation exchange between surfaces and view factors. Vapour diffusion, penetration of humidity in structures and soil, insulation of condensation and diffusion. Damped harmonic oscillator. Properties of materials, corrosion. Basics of sound, ultrasound, dependence of distance in sonic wave, intensity level and decibel scale, summation of intensity levels.

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The students are able to recognize the fundamental concepts and methods associated with the course and are able to solve simple problems.
The students can, when assisted, produce the energy efficiency documentation required in the building permit process.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

In addition to above, the students are able to apply the fundamental concepts and methods associated with the course to simple problems in natural and technical sciences.
The students can individually produce the energy efficiency documentation required in the building permit process. They can calculate the cooling load of a building and estimate its life cycle costs.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to above, the students are able to apply the fundamental concepts and methods associated with the course to more demanding problems in natural and technical sciences.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The students are able to recognize the fundamental concepts and methods associated with the course and are able to solve simple problems.
