Objective

The placement period’s main objectives are for students to experience the environment of a real, international workplace, develop interpersonal skills, acquire and develop technical skills associated with the nature of their work and acquire knowledge that will help students to plan and evaluate their future study and career development.
Studenst should become acquainted with working life in general and with the placement company’s area of business. During the placement students should take on “real employee” responsibility and learn how to apply theory in practice. The placement period is a good opportunity to explore the particular career option and make plans for future development.

Content

Work Placement is a compulsory part of the study programme. The idea of the placement is to give the student an opportunity to get acquainted with the placement company, their area of business and in real-life company practices.
The students are encouraged to complete their placement in a position that contains elements from their study field and is relevant to their major subject.
The placement can be completed abroad or in Finland. The placement can be completed in a company, in a public institution or in any other appropriate organization such as municipality or association. Self-employed work can also be accepted if other conditions for the internship are fulfilled.
The placement is completed by working full-time in a placement company for 10 weeks and reporting and analyzing the learning outcomes as required in the placement guidebook. The trainee’s tasks are related to international business, administration, and marketing or to other study subjects of the study programme.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student has achieved the course objectives fairly. The student will be able to identify, define and use the course subject area’s concepts and models. The student understands the criteria and principles of the expertise development.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student has achieved the course objectives well, even though the knowledge and skills need improvement on some areas. The student is able to define the course concepts and models and is able to justify the analysis. The student is able to apply his/her knowledge in leisure, study and work situations. The student understands the importance of expertise in the field of business and is able to analyze his/her own expertise.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has achieved the objectives of the course with excellent marks. The student masters commendably the course subject area’s concepts and models. The student is able to make justified and fluent analysis and to present concrete development measures. The student is well prepared to apply his/her knowledge in leisure, study and work situations. The student is able to analyze the business sector expertise and the evolvement of his/her own expertise.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The grading scale of the course is pass/fail.

Prerequisites

A 30 credit placement period is a mandatory part of the Bachelor´s degree programme.
It can be completed either as an extended 20 week period in the professional area of specialised studies or in two parts: 10 weeks of basic training and 10 weeks of professional training. Half of the internship (10 weeks) must be in the area of specialised studies. Typically the student leaves for her/his professional specialised training after her/his 2. or 3. year of study. The condition is that the student has begun her/his specialised studies. Earlier work experience is generally not accepted.
