Objective

The student
• is familiar with the application areas of programmable logic and industrial fieldbus systems and their principles of operation
• is able to design and program logic applications and fieldbus based applications
• is able to connect logic systems and commission fieldbus systems.

Content

• Programmable logic control (PLC)
• IEC 61131-3 programming standard and programming languages
• Wiring sensors and actuators to PLC
• Documentation of PLC systems
• Principles, description and programming of fieldbus systems
• Application programming of fieldbus systems

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student
• knows the applications and principles of PLC systems and fieldbuses
• can program a simple PLC and fieldbus application
• is familiar with the wiring principles of PLC systems, including sensors and different kinds of fieldbuses
• is familiar with the basic requirements of documentation for PLC and fieldbus systems.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student
• knows the applications and operation principles of PLC systems and fieldbuses
• is able to evaluate the suitability of different PLC and fieldbus systems for an application, and choose the necessary components
• can program and commission even more demanding PLC and fieldbus systems
• can draw up the documentation and create the necessary circuit diagrams for PLC and fieldbus systems.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student
• knows the applications and operation principles of PLC systems and fieldbuses
• is able to compare the suitability of different PLC and fieldbus systems for an application, and choose the necessary components
• can program even more demanding PLC and fieldbus systems, as well as build and commission such systems
• can combine different fieldbus systems with each other
• can create the documentation for the system components, wiring and programmes of PLC and fieldbus systems.

The student
• knows the applications and principles of PLC systems and fieldbuses
• can program a simple PLC and fieldbus application
• is familiar with the wiring principles of PLC systems, including sensors and different kinds of fieldbuses
• is familiar with the basic requirements of documentation for PLC and fieldbus systems.
