Objective

The student knows the fundamentals of mechanics of materials, machine elements, and mechanical properties of materials and their basic research methods.
The student can design simple structures taking into account the material behavior and safety requirements. The student can calculate and design different joints.

Content

1. Differential and integral calculus
2. Axially loaded members, beams
3. Torsion
4. Stress state, and failure theories
5. Connections in mechanical engineering
6. Tension test, bending, impact test, creep, and fatigue
7. The effect of manufacturing method on material selection
8. Safety of machines
9. Design project

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student can analyze simple problems of mechanics of materials and machine elements. He/she can calculate the second moment of area.
The student knows the most important joint types and components of power transmission.
The student knows different failure mechanisms of materials

The student knows how to calculate stresses and deflections in beams.
The student can calculate joints and select components for power transmission.
The student understands different failure mechanisms of materials.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student knows how to analyze statically indeterminate structures.
The student can select joints and calculate components of power transmission.
The student knows and is able to assess failure mechanisms of structures.
