Objective
On completion of the course, the student will be able to participate in short and simple conversations when the topic is familiar. He/she will be able to read and understand simple texts with the aid of a dictionary, and write simple texts about familiar topics, for example his/her background, personal history, home and leisure time. The student’s communication skills will correspond to the skill level A1.3–A2.1 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CERF).
Content
- oral and written communication in everyday contexts: talking about home and leisure time activities, spending time with friends, and the weather
-new grammatical structures, for example using the object, expressing necessity and opinion, past tenses
- basic features of spoken Finnish and the Finnish way of life

The student is able to
- reply to questions in a simple conversation, when the topic is familiar
- compose short and simple texts concerning everyday life
- identify for example expressions of necessity and opinion, as well as past tenses in familiar texts
- recognise some basic features of colloquial Finnish and the Finnish way of life
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The student is able to
- communicate understandably in a simple conversation concerning familiar topics
- further the conversation for example by asking questions
- understand short texts concerning everyday life with the aid of a dictionary
- compose simple understandable texts on familiar topics
- apply basic grammatical structures when instructed
- understand some basic features of colloquial Finnish and of the Finnish way of life
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student is able to
- participate in short and simple conversations concerning familiar everyday topics both as a listener and as a speaker
- understand short texts concerning everyday life with the aid of a dictionary
- compose understandable texts on familiar topics
- apply the grammar he/she has learnt to new words and expressions
- pay attention to pronunciation
- understand and shows interest in basic features of colloquial Finnish and the Finnish way of life
