Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Understand and use key Finnish terminology related to biomedical laboratory science.
- Communicate effectively in Finnish in typical professional situations, such as patient encounters and workplace discussions.
- Read and comprehend written materials relevant to laboratory work (e.g., instructions, reports, and safety guidelines).
- Write short, profession-related texts in Finnish, such as documentation or brief messages.
- Strengthen their overall confidence in using Finnish in their studies and future work environments.
Content
This course is designed for biomedical laboratory science students who already have some knowledge of Finnish and wish to further improve their language skills in a professional context. The course focuses on Finnish language use in biomedical laboratory settings, including key terminology, patient interaction, and workplace communication. Through practical exercises and field-specific vocabulary, students will strengthen their ability to communicate clearly and appropriately in both written and spoken Finnish within their future profession.

Student workload
The course is worth 5 ECTS credits, which corresponds to approximately 135 hours of student work. The course is completed independently over the course of the semester, and students can schedule their work flexibly according to their own situation. We recommend progressing steadily throughout the semester to manage workload evenly.
Content scheduling
The course content is divided into six themes, all of which are available on Moodle from the beginning of the course. Students can progress through the themes in any order and at their own pace. However, we recommend progressing steadily to help manage the workload.
Assessment methods and criteria
The course is completed independently in Moodle. Assessment is based on the submitted assignments, and the grading scale is pass/fail. To pass the course, all assignments must be submitted according to the instructions and demonstrate achievement of the course objectives.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed
To pass the course, the student must:
- Complete all required assignments and activities in Moodle by the given deadlines.
- Demonstrate sufficient understanding of key Finnish vocabulary and expressions related to biomedical laboratory work.
- Show the ability to use Finnish appropriately in typical professional situations through written tasks and/or quizzes.
- Reach the minimum required score in self-assessment tests and comprehension exercises.
- Participate in any mandatory reflection or summary task at the end of the course (if applicable).
Failure to meet these criteria will result in a fail (hylätty).
