Tavoitteet
This course covers key database principles, including relational database models, data structures, and SQL (Structured Query Language). Students will learn how to create, retrieve, update, and manipulate data using SQL commands, as well as understand the importance of data integrity, normalization, and relationships between tables.
Designed for beginners, this course builds a strong foundation for students interested in database management, software development, and data analytics. Through hands-on exercises and real-world scenarios, learners will gain practical experience in working with databases, preparing them for further studies in database administration or related IT fields.

- Write and execute SQL queries to retrieve, manipulate, and manage data.

Opetusmenetelmät
The course is conducted in Metropolia's Moodle and the Oracle Academy online portal. The Oracle Academy online portal contains all the learning materials and serves as the foundation for the entire learning process. Moodle provides additional instructions, course review sections, and the final exam that is completed online.
To log in and use the Oracle Academy Database Foundations courseware, students need the following:
Students must have an Oracle Academy account. Oracle Academy account is provided through the university, and the instructor invites students to join.
Students must be enrolled in the Database Foundations course by their instructor.
A stable internet connection.
A supported web browser: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Edge.
The course is studied in such a way that the student learns the theory and explores the exercises and projects in the Oracle Academy workspace. At the same time, they complete the course exercises an projects in Metropolia's Moodle.
The course exercises (practices) and a projects extend throughout the entire course. The students submit their solutions and/or comments related to the exercises and the project to Metropolia's Moodle, which is used to track their progress.
At the end of each unit, there is a review quiz. The review questions are directly based on the corresponding section of the course. The review test can be retaken three times. The next section becomes available for study once the quiz has been successfully completed or all attempts have been used.
At the end of the course, a final exam is taken in Moodle. The final test consists of approximately 60+ multiple-choice questions and the duration is 2 hours. All final exam questions are from the course materials and the review questions. The passing threshold is 70%. The test can be retaken three times.
