Learning outcomes

The student
• knows the construction and principles of operation of spectrophotometric and atomic spectroscopy equipment
• is able to measure absorption spectra with a spectrophotometer and perform quantitative analyses using spectroscopic methods
• is able to analyse and interpret measurement results critically.

Content

• Basics of spectrometry
• Atomic spectroscopy
• Operational principles of UV-Vis- and fluorescence spectrophotometer including basics of AAS, MP-AES, and ICP-OES
• Spectrophotometric measurements, calibration methods, and interpretation of the results

Prerequisites

Fundamentals of Chemistry 1, Orientation to the Field and Studies

Evaluation scale

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student demonstrates achievement of the objectives of the core competences and uses concepts and knowledge in a consistent manner. The student is able to perform spectrometry-based analyses as instructed and prepare work reports that include all required sections. Results are reported with the correct accuracy.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student understands the influence of different instrument parameters in UV-Vis, fluorescence spectrophotometry and AAS measurements The student works carefully and purposefully when performing analyses. The report is clear in structure and language. The student is able to draw conclusions independently and the results include an estimate of the uncertainty of the measurement.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students will be able to apply theory and select measurement conditions and instrument parameters for UV-Vis, fluorescence spectrophotometry and AAS measurements. The student will work independently, on their own initiative and with a sense of purpose. The student is able to plan and schedule their work in a rational way. The language of the report and the review of results are excellent.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student demonstrates achievement of the objectives of the core competences and uses concepts and knowledge in a consistent manner. The student is able to perform spectrometry-based analyses as instructed and prepare work reports that include all required sections. Results are reported with the correct accuracy.
