Professional Communication and English (5 ECTS)

Objective

The student is able to communicate in Finnish and English in a multicultural, multilingual and multidisciplinary work community.
The student is able to write key expert texts in their own field.
The student is able to apply scientific writing practices in professional work duties.
The student is able to communicate fluently and effectively in Finnish and English in learning and working life assignments related to their field.
The student is able to use Finnish and English to develop their professional skills.
The student understands the importance of language awareness as a part of their professional skills.

Content

Expert communications in Finnish, 2 credits
- Expert texts and professional interaction orally and in writing
- Advanced scientific writing skills
- Language awareness in a work community
Professional English, 3 credits
- Command of the key English-language vocabulary related to the student’s profession and its use in oral and written interaction
- Reading scientific texts and utilising English-language sources in learning and work assignments
- Basics of writing in a factual style
- Language awareness and cultural awareness in international work communities

Exam schedules

Professional English contains a written and an oral exam.
Further information on the exams and assignments will be given in the first lesson.

Completion alternatives

Previous language and communication studies in higher education degrees may be recognised through credit transfer or a demonstration of competence (eRPL).

Student workload

The scope of the course is 5 credits, which corresponds to 135 hours of student work.
Professional communication (Finnish) 2 credits and Professional English 3 credits

Further information

The student confirms their place by being present at the beginning of the class or in another way separately agreed with the teacher. If the student is unable to attend the beginning of the lesson due to illness, they can also confirm their place of study by informing the teacher in advance.

Course assignments must be submitted by the deadline. The course is not evaluated if the assignments are submitted after the deadline. In this case, the student must register for the implementation of the following semester.

The assignments and MATERIALS prepared by the teacher are works according to the Copyright Act (404/61), to which the teacher has the copyright. Assignments AND MATERIALS may not be used other than in their own studies. Their public distribution is only allowed with the permission of the teacher.

The utilization of artificial intelligence in course assignments will be instructed in class.

· Student does not have adequate professional knowledge or skills
· Student does not act according to educational objectives or instruction

· Student does not consider professional safety or ethical principles sufficiently
· Student does not show adequate readiness to participate in group and development work

Assessment methods and criteria

Professional English will be evaluated numerically (0-5). The assessment criteria will be discussed in the first lesson.

Professional communication (Finnish) will be evaluated numerically (0-5). The assessment criteria will be provided for each assignment.

The final grade is the average of the two parts.
