Objective

The student
• masters notation, basic musical terminology and general terminology
• is familiar with the rhythmic features of music and interpretative practices
• develops knowledge and skills in the most common phenomena of rhythmic music as well as types of beats and tempos
• develops their knowledge and skills in the most common time signatures and tempos
• is able to work independently
• is prepared to continue with Rhythm Studies 2 and Music Theory and Ear Training 2.

Content

• Basic time signatures and the most common compound time signatures
• Rhythmic patterns, syncopation, and correct rhythmic notation
• Introduction to swing phrasing and similar phenomena
• Performing notated rhythms with preparation and prima vista
• Notating heard rhythms

Rytmiikka 1-tunnit keskiviikkoisin 3.9.-25 alkaen kello 13–14.30 luokkahuoneessa AS513. Opettaja on Marko Puro.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student
• demonstrates proficiency in notation, basic musical concepts, and general terminology
• demonstrates proficiency in rhythmic features of music and interpretative practices
• has learned to apply their knowledge and skills in the most common time signatures and tempos
• is capable of independent work.

Qualifications

Degree according to the extended syllabus level of basic education in music in Finland or equivalent skills and knowledge.

This is a compulsory study module for all main subjects.
