Objective

The student understands the main sensor technologies and their principles of operation in autonomous systems. They will be familiar with the basics of sensor fusion and can explain how data from different sensors is combined to support reliable environment observation and decision making.

Content

1. Sensors in autonomous systems and their principles of operation
2. Fundamentals of sensor fusion and data fusion

Evaluation scale

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student
• will identify the sensors of autonomous systems and their basic operation.
• will understand the importance of sensor fusion and be able to explain its basics.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student
• can compare different sensors and analyse their use in different applications.
• can combine and analyse data from multiple sensors using sensor fusion.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student
• can evaluate and select the appropriate sensors for the application and optimise their use.
• can apply sensor fusion to practical problem solving and critically analyse the results.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Sensor technologies and basics of sensor fusion (1 ECTS) is passed if the student identifies the main sensors used in autonomous systems, can explain their operating principles and understands the basics of sensor fusion. Passing the theory test is a prerequisite for successful completion. Failure means that the student does not demonstrate a sufficient understanding of sensors, their operation or sensor fusion and does not pass the theory test.

Qualifications

No prior knowledge requirements.

Further information

Sensor technologies and basics of sensor fusion (1 ECTS) is performed independently in an online environment, where students learn about sensors for autonomous systems and the basic principles of sensor fusion. The course includes a theoretical part and a quiz, the successful completion of which is a prerequisite for progression to the following sections.
