Objective

After completing the course, you will be able to find the conditions under which a structure is in equilibrium. You will be able to find out how a structure acts as a load on surrounding structures and how the structure itself is loaded internally. You will be able to identify different types of forces and find the moment of a force about a point. You will be able to identify a statically determinate structure, write the equilibrium conditions and find the support reactions of the structure in 2D. You will be able to apply the method of sections to a beam or a plane frame, to find internal reactions in different cross sections and draw the internal reaction diagrams of the structure.

Content

Concept of force, types of force, moment of a force
Free body diagram and equilibrium conditions in 2D
Types of support, support reactions, point load and distributed load
Identification of a statically determinate structure
Internal reactions of a structure: normal force, shear force and bending moment
Internal reaction diagrams of a beam and a plane frame

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

You are able to apply statics in simple cases by making use of solved problems appropriate to the situation at hand.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

You are able to apply statics in cases essentially familiar to you.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

You are able to apply statics open-mindedly and critically in new and demanding cases.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed
