Objective
After completing the course, the student
• can compose a leadsheet that shows the melody, chords, form, tempo and musical phenomena relevant to the identity of the piece
• is able to compose a score for guitar, drums and bass in the style of the instrument
• is familiar with the aesthetics of popular music through listening and notation examples
• has explored the aesthetics of popular music by playing, where appropriate.
Content
The student develops an understanding of popular music. The student will learn about the subject by listening to a wide range of music, analysing and evaluating sheet music and, where appropriate, playing.

The student
• Identifies the characteristics of different periods of popular music
• is able to work independently and in groups
• is able to work independently on the leadsheet of a song.

Degree according to the extended syllabus level of basic education in music in Finland or equivalent skills and knowledge.
