Objective

The student
• is proficient with notation, basic musical concepts, and general terminology
• masters melody and harmony based on major-minor tonality
• becomes familiar with the melodic and rhythmic features of music and interpretative practices
• develops their knowledge and skills in the most common keys, time signatures, and tempos
• is capable of independent work
• is prepared to continue with the Music Theory and Ear Training 2 course.

Content

Music theory
• General professional terminology
• Chord degrees and notation methods for triads and seventh chords, as well as cadences in major and minor keys
• Diatonic scales and keys (including church modes)

Ear training
• Diatonic melodies in the most common keys
• G and F clefs
• Chord progressions with triads and seventh chords

The student
• demonstrates mastery of notation, basic musical concepts, and general terminology
• demonstrates mastery of melody and harmony based on major-minor tonality
• is familiar with the melodic and rhythmic features of music and interpretative practices
• is able to apply their knowledge and skills in the most common keys, time signatures, and tempos
• is capable of independent work.

Qualifications

Degree according to the extended syllabus level of basic education in music in Finland or equivalent skills and knowledge.

This is a compulsory study module for all main subjects.
