Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student will be able to participate in everyday life communication in familiar situations and their language proficiency will be sufficient to take care of simple practical things. The student is able to understand the main points in short, ordinary texts and also conclude details from the context. The student is able to write short messages and describe their personal history and leisure time in a simple manner. The student’s communication skills will correspond to the skills level A2.1-A2.2 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Content

• Oral and written communication in everyday contexts: leisure time, hobbies, nature, service situations, simple news, basic information about Finnish culture and society
• Grammatical structures, for example verb tenses, verb rections, connecting sentences, object and plural partitive
• The most important features of spoken Finnish

Prerequisites

Previous knowledge of Finnish on the A1.3-A2.1 level, e.g. the courses Finnish 1 and Finnish 2

Teaching methods

This course will include a variety of methodologies, such as lectures, discussions, individual and group work, flipped learning and Wordwall-exercises.

Learning materials and recommended literature

Gehring, Sonja & Sanni Heinzmann: Suomen mestari 2 (renewed version, published 2022 or later.
Suomen kielen oppikirja aikuisille. Finn Lectura. Chapters 1 - 4.

Exam dates and retake possibilities

Vocabulary tests every 3 weeks. Oral and written exam are held in end of the course. The exact dates to be announced on the first lesson.

Resit will be in the beginning of the next semester, if not announced otherwise.

Student workload

- 5 credit course = 135 hours of work
- 45 hours work during the contact / online classes
- 90 hours independent work

Assessment methods and criteria

- Active participation in lectures.
- Attendance 80 % of the lectures
- Passing grade for the vocabulary tests, assignments, the oral exam and the final exam.

The student has achieved the course objectives to a satisfactory level. The student
• is able to answer questions in simple conversations
• is able to write short and simple texts about everyday life
• understands the main points and some details in ordinary texts
• recognises the most important features of spoken language.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student has achieved the course objectives well, even though the knowledge and skills need improvement in some areas. The student
• is able to apply simple and familiar structures and vocabulary in leisure time and study related situations
• communicates understandably in a simple conversation
• can further the conversation by asking questions and commenting
• understands everyday life texts and is able to draft understandable texts (messages and descriptions) about familiar topics
• understands basic features of spoken language.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has achieved the objectives of the course with excellent marks. The student
• is able to participate both as a listener and as a speaker in simple conversations when the topics concern familiar everyday situations
• is able to further the conversation to a certain extent and understand some spoken language
• is able to understand short texts concerning everyday life even though the topic is not related to their immediate surroundings
• has good capabilities to apply their skills in situations in leisure time, studies and work.
