Objective

Student
- knows the guidelines and legislation related to drug therapy and their significance
- can plan, implement and evaluate safe drug therapy using different routes of administration
- has a basic knowledge of pharmacology
- can guide the client/patient in drug therapy and medication adherence.

Content

Role, tasks and responsibilities of a nurse in drug therapy
Organisation, management and supervision of pharmaceutical services, medicine and medication safety
Safe drug therapy process and medication plan
Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics and toxicology
Use of pharmaceutical databases
Different pharmaceutical forms and routes of administration
Medication guidance, adherence and self-medication
Medication-related adverse events and related reporting procedure

- Approx 50% of studies contact teaching on campus/zoom.

Exam schedules

Time of the exams as scheduled in timetable: TBC at the beginning of the course. All exams will be conducted in EXAM.

Everyone is entitled to two retake attempts. Retake dates are announced at the orientation of the course. Exam grade could be upgraded once at the first retake exam. Retake exam are completed as per instructions given at the orientation.

Retake 1 & 2: TBC when course begins.

Alternatively, the student may complete the course together with Finnish taught group.

Completion alternatives

It is possible to apply total or partly AHOT/RPL (recognition of prior learning) based on earlier studies, according to AHOT-guidelines (please see OMA). The AHOT process must be commenced before the course begins. The student going through the process must enroll on the course as usual and attend on orientation so the compensatory activities can be agreed. Decision of partial AHOT must be presented to the responsible teacher prior to course orientation.

Student workload

1 cr = 27 h
The course consists of 135 hours of which the amount contact hours will be xxh (theory, clinical laboratory teaching, simulation, learning cafe and escape room) and independent study xx h (preparing for exam, web-based materials and learning assignments). Hours will be clarified prior course orientation.

Further information

Pharmacotherapy 1 contains the following parts: theory, clinical labs and simulations and pharmacology 1. Info about exam practices will be provided on orientation.

Participation in orientation is compulsory.

Theory lectures include learning activities, that are compulsory and require attendance. In case of absence student is required to ask teacher for instructions on how to compensate.

Participation in clinical labs is compulsory. Students are required to wear appropriate protective uniforms in clinical labs. Instructions given in asepsis lectures are being followed during practicing.

Please note that the assignments and materials prepared by the lecturers are works in accordance with the Copyright Act (404/61) for which the lecturer has copyright. Assignments and materials may not be used except in their own studies. Their public distribution is only allowed with the permission of the lecturer.
