Objective

The student learns about concepts and terminologies in graphic design, User Interface (UI) design, and typography. The student understands the particular requirements in designing different graphic products. The student can communicate with images, texts and their interaction, professional drawing, layout software, as well as understand the application of graphic design techniques in practice.

Content

- Basic concepts in graphic design and UI design
- Basic principles and history of typography
- Utilising the use of texts and images for design communication
- Basic knowledge in utilising drawing and layout design software

Teaching methods

The course includes exercises related to graphic design.

The software used will be Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and possibly game engines.

- Basic concepts of graphic design and user interface design
- Basic principles of typography
- Using texts and images in design communication
- Basic knowledge of drawing and layout design software.

Completion alternatives

ERPL option based on equivalent course or skills.

Student workload

12 days of working with graphic design exercises.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student understands the basic knowledge in graphic design, UI design, and typography, and knows how to implement their learning in a graphic product by completing the assignments and the final project. The students can utilise the software introduced during the course and produce graphic products.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is well-versed with the basic knowledge of graphic design, UI design, and typography. The student experiments with many techniques related to their learning when producing graphic products for the assignments and the final project. The student is aware of the way different graphic design techniques could be applied differently depending on the design context.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has broad knowledge of the concepts of graphic design, UI design, typography, and the specific requirements of various graphic products. The student is able to communicate creatively with an image, text and their interaction, as well as use a drawing and layout program for professional use and apply their graphic design skills in various ways.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student understands the basic knowledge in graphic design, UI design, and typography, and knows how to implement their learning in a graphic product by completing the assignments and the final project. The students can utilise the software introduced during the course and produce graphic products.
