Objective
The student understands the basics of user-oriented design and is able to utilise their knowledge in the development of XR services and applications. The student is able to work professionally in client projects.
Content
During the course, the student expands their XR and project working skills by applying and further developing acquired skills and knowledge. The course focuses on user-oriented design and user experience through the implementation of a service concept operating in an XR environment.
- Basics of user-oriented design
- User experience
- Accessibility
- Gamification
- Cooperating with a customer
- Further development of 3D modelling skills
- Further development of game engine skills
- Conceptualisation and presentation of an idea
- Design and implementation of an XR environment and service
Location and time
The course will have an 80% attendance requirement within our XR classroom. This can mean one remote day per week.
If you need a lot more flexibility to your attendance, consider alternative methods for completing the course or negotiate with the supervising senior lecturer.
Materials
All course materials will be posted on the Teams -channel created for this course.
Teaching methods
This is a project course where you'll be working in teams of at least 3.
For this course, we look for external projects with clients. There is a "game workshop" -track that is an alternative.
Your team will design a project taking client's needs into account. To refine your project, collect ongoing feedback from lecturers, client demos and Demo-Fridays. Follow the "double diamond" -format for your design and development process.
One member in the team will be a product manager. The team will have internal daily progression reports and the PM will join an ongoing daily PM meetings. A weekly team meeting is encouraged with an option for attending senior lecturer.
We will foster an atmosphere of collaboration and support with an effort to accommodate and welcome each member of our small learning community.
There may be some lectures during the course. Most of the course is dedicated to collaborative project work. You may have some access to direct, personalized support from the senior lecturer in the classroom.
For the final presentation you team will present the outcome to be viewed collectively, discussing and recognizing the efforts of each student.

Completion alternatives
You can use real-world experiences for working in similar projects as an alternative way to get accredited for the course. This can be done via The Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL, fin. AHOT).
The project needs to be a group project done professionally, or at a University level of education.
Student workload
Attending the course, you're expected to work from 9:15 to 15:00 during weekdays.
Evaluation scale
0-5

Assessment criteria, good (3)
The student masters and is able to apply the basics and techniques of user-oriented design. The student is able to evaluate the significance of a research approach related to the design of services to the quality of design work. The student understands the meaning of documentation and is able to produce it. He masters the processes of service design. The student masters the utilization of prototypes as part of design work.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student masters and is able to creatively apply the basics and techniques of user-oriented design. The student understands and is able to comprehensively evaluate the significance of the research approach related to the design of services for the quality of design work. The student is able to apply documentation methods and deeply understand the importance of documentation in design. He understands the processes of service design and is able to shape them creatively and needs-based. The student is able to look extensively at the utilization of prototypes as part of design work.
Assessment criteria, approved/failed
The student is familiar with the concepts and basics of user-oriented design. He is familiar with the key tools and techniques of service design. The student recognizes the importance of a research approach in the design of services. He / she is able to produce documentation of his / her work and outline the processes of service design. The student knows about the use of prototypes as a design tool.
Assessment methods and criteria
Team grades are based on the overall quality of the project, teamwork, the student's personal skill development, and anonymous peer evaluations from team members.
In the peer evaluation, each team member writes about the others:
- What the team member did well.
- What the team member could improve on.
These evaluations are submitted to the instructor, who compiles individual, anonymous feedback for each student.
Qualifications
The student must have completed the courses “3D Software, Polygon Modelling and Animation”, “Game Engines and Real-Time Rendering”, “XR Technologies and Ecosystems” and “XR Product Design”.
