Objective

The student knows how to work safely and accurately in laboratory. The student understands the importance of use of personal safety equipment. The student knows the risks related to chemicals and the importance of handling hazardous waste. Student knows sustainable development principles related to chemical safety and use of water.

The student learns to identify the destructive insects and the damage they cause. The student knows hazardous substances in collections and objects and knows how to prevent biological risks for collections.

Content

Accurate and safe working methods in laboratory, material safety data sheets, handling of waste. Hazardous substances in museum collections and molds, pests and insects in museums. Environmental factors causing biological deterioration and preventive actions. Microscopy and applications of different analytical methods for conservation documentation.

Location and time

Opintojakso toteutetaan lähiopetuksena Metropolian Arabian kampuksella.

Materials

Literature list and study hand out given by the lecturer.

Teaching methods

Tuition mostly in Finnish, lecture, contact teaching, guided assignments, laboratory works, independent work with literature.

Student workload

The weekly working hours of a student is 1,5 cr which is equivalent to 40 hours of studies. 40 hours is formed from approx. 23 hours of contact studies with a lecturer. The remaining hours is spent by independent literature survey or practical work. 1 credit (cr) is equivalent to 26 hours (h).

During the study module the student should read up on the given literature together with practical work.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to understand the basic concepts and theory related to the course. The student knows how to work safely in laboratory. Student can use microscopes in basic level and recocnises different types of risks for objects and collections. The student is able to acquire information independently. The student as a group member encouraging and strengthening the group work.

The student knows well the basic theme and concepts of the course. The student shows good theoretical and practical knowledge. The student can use microscopes well and recocnises different types of risks for objects and collections. The student is able to acquire information independently. The student works as a group member encouraging and strengthening the work in the group.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student masters the course theme and has achieved excellent level in his/her knowledge and skills. The student shows excellent theoretical and practical knowledge and is able to apply learned during the course skills and knowledge. The student can use microscopes well and can apply his knowledge for documentation. Student recocnises different types of risks for objects and collections. The student is able to acquire information independently and is able to analyze and apply this information. The student acts as a group member encouraging and strengthening the group.
