Objective

After completing the course, the students are able to:
• understand the periods and most common styles in the history of Western dress culture and fashion.
• describe development of fashion and the clothing industry.
• understand the role of dress as part of culture.
• recognize the social and cultural backgrounds and differences in dressing.
• understand the importance of dress-influencing signals in interpersonal communication and social interaction.
• understand the desire for change in cultures and interpret the phenomena influencing change in dressing.
• differentiate between different dressing customs between cultures, and design or offer appropriate collections for different customer groups/cultures.

Content

The most common styles of Western dress in history, their appearance and development in Europe. 20th century fashion houses and 20th century European fashion designers. The development of the Haute Couture phenomenon in Europe and the Finnish fashion salon tradition. The birth and development of the clothing industry in Finland. Finnish and European dress cultures and customs. Dress as a means of communication and social interaction: influencing by dress. Lifestyles and dress. Impact of cultural background on dress. Value systems defining dress. Future visions for the clothing industry.
