Objective

On completion of the course, the student will be able to tell about and discuss different topics and use related vocabulary and structures in a diverse manner. In addition, the student will know and be able to use different expressions and structures of spoken language. The student’s oral communication skills will correspond to the skills level A2.2-B1.1 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Content

- oral communication in different everyday life situations, for example telling, describing, comparing, expressing one’s opinion and explaining it, suggesting, small talk, taking a turn in a discussion
- discussion about current events and other separately agreed topics
- widening the vocabulary and applying different expressions and structures to one’s own speech
- expressions and structures (such as verb forms, pronouns and little words) of spoken language

Student workload

The student's amount of work 81 h.

Face-to-face-classes 22 hours, guided small group work 8 hours, homework and independent studying 51 hours.

Further information

This Finnish as a second language course is open to all Metropolia degree students, 3AMK students and also students in Metropolia Open University of Applied Sciences.

A lot of independent work required: reading, listening and studying vocabulary and characteristics of spoken language. Book time for independent studying on your calendar at least 3 h/week.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student has achieved the course objectives fairly. The student
- can manage in common speech situations of everyday life
- is able to tell about and discuss different topics
- tries to utilise what he/she has read and apply vocabulary and structures to his/her own speech
- is able to use quite wide vocabulary and some phrases and idioms
- knows the most important structures of spoken language and is able to use them in his/her speech.

Continuos assessment (participation in the classes and small group, assignments on Moodle), oral presentation

Qualifications

Previous knowledge of Finnish on the A2.2 level, e.g. the courses Finnish 1 (A1.2), Finnish 2 (A2.1), Finnish 3 (A2.1.A2.2) and Finnish 4 (A2.2) or at least the books Suomen mestari 1-2
