Objective

On completion of the course the student can
- Develop practical, creative and innovative solutions, practices and services with multidisciplinary partners to meet the diverse needs in the Helsinki Metropolitan area.
The student participates in project or network-based work and applies his or her expertise in regional, national or international development work.
- Use his or her personal skills and abilities to work and collaborate in multidisciplinary teams.
- Create a culture of cooperation and negotiation with the team members and other actors.
- Use his or her skills in problem solving, collaboration and communication to support the social development and joint decision making of the team.

Content

Project and innovation work: brainstorming, planning, implementing, assessing, communicating, publishing, product development and marketing.
Cooperative skills, interest group activities and networking.
Innovative work methods.
Areas of communal development skills: development processes, coordinating and managing development, reforming the development concepts.

An international and multidisciplinary Diabetes seminar is organized every academic year for two groups of students completing their innovation studies at a time. Students from both the spring and autumn courses participate in the two-day seminar, which takes place in the autumn semester, together with other degrees.

Participation in the course requires that the following courses have been successfully completed:
- All studies related to eye examination and contact lens fitting:
Basics of eye examination,
Determining the refractive error of the eye,
Binocular vision,
Orthoptics and work life training
Fitting contact lenses and working life training
- Pathology and pharmacology (studies supporting ophthalmology and comprehensive eye examination)
If there are any deficiencies regarding these previous studies, please contact your tutor.

The four biggest eye diseases in Finland: Glaucoma?, Cataract, Diabetic retinopathy,
Age-related macular degeneration > client understanding and the impact of the disease on the client's ability to function
Health promotion?
o Types of health promotion (local vs. national)?
o Standardized screening protocols to detect the disease (including anamnesis and examination selection).
o National guidelines for the treatment of various eye diseases - Käypähoito?
o Informing the customer in different media (brochures, films, shows).
o The need for optometric examinations according to the client's age
o Guidance on the effect of lifestyle on eye diseases and health
o Promoters and barriers to health promotion?
Course content:
- Working at KyläOPTIK > regulations for the production of services in the optical field and the laws governing the operation in practical work > working life cooperation in the optical field
- Work Shop topics: ICF and vision, consultation, multidisciplinary, screening, service design, customer communication, interview practice task and group forming, research assignment, ICD-10, Current Care Guidelines, general pathology (applied learning via case examples), innovation seminar
- International and multidisciplinary diabetes seminar day (diabetes seminar in english) with midwive and public health nurse students

Instructions on the use of artificial intelligence during the course are given separately. Students should familiarise themselves with Metropolia's AI guidelines and follow them in their study attainments.

The student knows the principles of project and network-based work.

The student can develop together with the other actors solutions and modes of operation to meet the multi-faceted needs of the residents of the Helsinki metropolitan area.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student uses the principles of project and network-based work in regional, national or international development oriented work.
The student uses his or her co-operation and communication skills well in cooperative development processes and decision making.
The student helps to set-up a cooperative negotiation culture with other actors in the field. The student uses his/her personal skills and abilities to contribute to the work of a multidisciplinary team.
The student develops together with the other actors practical, creative and innovative solutions, modes of operation or services to meet the multi-faceted needs of the residents of the Helsinki metropolitan area.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student's ability to use principles of project and network-based work in regional, national or international development oriented work is on a high level.
The student is able to analyse and develop his/her co-operation and communication skills in cooperative development processes and decision making.
The student understands cooperative negotiation culture and helps to build it with the other actors.
The student is able to analyse and develop his/her professional competence and put it in the service of a multidisciplinary team.
The student develops together with the other actors practical, creative and innovative solutions, modes of operation or services to meet the multi-faceted needs of the residents of the Helsinki metropolitan area.
