Objective

A student obtains a general view on modern physics and its effect on technical applications. (S)he also learns to master more advanced mathematics. A student with a successful completion of the course obtains knowledge that may help her/him to apply for master programs.

On completion of this course the student:
• understands the history of the scientific development of matter and energy
• has the big picture of the mathematical topics belonging to the course and having highly important role in engineering sciences
• can explain the basic phenomena of modern physics (quantum physics) and understands their effect on modern technological applications and the functioning of technical devices
• is able to analyze and solve essential physical problems
• masters the software used in the course
• understands the contents of related scientific and technical articles

Content

• Complex numbers
• Differential equations and their use in modelling of phenomena
• Functions of several variables, vectors and matrices
• Quantum physics and its impact on physical models of matter and energy
• Quantum physics in development of modern technology

Evaluation scale

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student:
• understands the basic phenomena of modern physics (quantum physics)
• is able to solve basic mathematical problems of the course
• can explain and present mathematical solutions of physical problems practiced in the course

Assessment criteria, good (3)

In addition to satisfactory criteria, the student:
• is able to analyze the functioning of modern technological applications and the relationships between the physical laws and the mathematical methods related to the applications
• is able to apply learned mathematical methods

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

In addition to the good criteria, the student:
• has an excellent understanding of the studied physical phenomena and their applications
• masters excellently the mathematical methods of the course
• can apply his/her acquired knowledge and methods in various situations
• understands scientific and technical articles of the subjects studied in the course

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student:
• understands the basic phenomena of modern physics (quantum physics)
• is able to solve basic mathematical problems of the course
• can explain and present mathematical solutions of physical problems practiced in the course

Qualifications

A student who masters the basics of classical physics (mechanics, electricity and magnetism, and wave motion) and has good mathematical basic skills, benefits most of this course.
