Objective

After completing the course, the student understands basic terminology relating to reference models, LANs, WANs. The student knows the basics of Ethernet operation and Ethernet switching, IP addressing and the basics of IP subnetting. The student is able to set up a small LAN segment of two workstations, an Ethernet switch and a router connection, calculate subnet and set the workstation’s TCP/IP parameters and use ping to test destination reachability. Basic wireless connection set-up and understanding.

Content

Basic network terminology relating to network protocols, networking models: Open System Interconnection (OSI) model and TCP/IP model, Ethernet operation, Internet Protocol (IP) addressing, subnetting and masks, Domain Name Server. Routing fundamentals, Structured Cabling and concepts: bandwidth, throughput, more details on versions of Ethernet.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Understands layered system models, characteristics of LAN, structured cabling, common equipment used in local area networks and applications. Understands the basics of TCP/IP-protocol and subnetting.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Understands the basics of IP routing, structured cabling and common terminology. Can calculate IP-subnets, define IP-addresses on the workstation and test the usability of IP connection

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Can design, implement and test a small network segment, and connect a workstation into a local area network.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Understands layered system models, characteristics of LAN, structured cabling, common equipment used in local area networks and applications. Understands the basics of TCP/IP-protocol and subnetting.

Qualifications

Completing first year study modules or equivalent skills and knowledge.
