Objective
The student can identify and explain the concepts related to digital twins. The student understands the relation of a digital twin to the models of built environment - especially BIM models - and the sensor and imaging data. The student can analyse, specify and implement digital twins for specific purposes and use scenarios, including the specification of the relevant properties of physical system that its digital twin should mirror, and the specification and implementation of the update processes that are required for different properties. The student knows and can apply practical tools and platforms for building digital twins in construction domain and has experience in applying them. The student can analyse and evaluate the accuracy of a digital twin, and implement interfaces between a digital twin and external systems.
Content
Project course that includes
1. the development of a digital twin to an example building and
2. the learning objectives about digital twins:
• basic concepts
• relations of relation of a digital twin to the models of built environment
• applications in built environments
• benefits and uses
• update procedures of mirrored properties
• platforms and tools
• the role of visualisation and animation
• the role of sensor data
• interfaces with external systems
Evaluation scale
0-5
Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)
The student has achieved the minimal objectives of the course. The student can identify and explain the concepts related to digital twins. The student knows and is familiar with some software tools in the area. The student has completed the required learning exercises at minimum requirement level. The competencies acquired form the basis for the student to build their knowledge in digital twins in the construction domain, eventually enabling a job position in system maintenance or software testing.
Assessment criteria, good (3)
The student has achieved the objectives of the course well, even though the knowledge and skills need improvement on some areas. The student can identify and explain the concepts related to digital twins. The student knows and is familiar with the main software tools and specifications in the area. The student has completed the required learning exercises at good or satisfactory level. The student is able to analyse the needs and possibilities for creating a digital twin, and can create basic models and update processes for some mirrored properties. The student has the capability to apply the knowledge in further studies and in software development work related to digital twins.
Assessment criteria, excellent (5)
The student has achieved the objectives of the course with excellence. The student can identify, explain and justify the concepts related to digital twins. The student knows and can use main software tools and specifications in the area. The student has completed the required learning exercises at excellent or good level. The student is able to analyse the needs and possibilities for creating a digital twin, can evaluate possible implementation approaches, select the best techniques in a principled manner, and can implement a functional digital twin in normal scenarios. The student has an excellent basis to apply the knowledge in further studies and in software development related to digital twins.
