Objective

Students acquire a broad understanding of construction surveying related to infrastructure projects. After completing the course, students master a wide range of ways to use the total station and the GPS hardware.Students will become familiar with BIM and machine control in infrastructure projects

Content

Use of robotic total station
Use of total station in a versatile way for structure mapping and position measurement
Use of GPS equipment
Use of total station jointly with GPS equipment.
Load measurements
BIM and machine control applications.

Location and time

Myllypuro campus.
According to the academic schedule.

Materials

LITERATURE AND OTHER TEACHING MATERIAL
There is no book for the course. The teaching material for the theory classes is the things to be done and the notes to be written about them.
The teaching material for the laboratory is various measuring devices for infrastructure construction, notes and instructions to be written on the board, and exercises to be done with measuring devices during the classes.

A CALCULATOR IS NEEDED FOR THE CLASSES THAT ALSO HAS ANGLES IN DEGREES.

Lecture material that is saved in MOODLE.
Will be announced at the beginning of the course.

Teaching methods

Activating lecture
Presentation lecture
Guided exercises
Task-based teaching
Calculations

Exercises and small group work.

Theory test and total station test

Exam schedules

Announced at the beginning of the course. Appears in order
Exams are held at the end of the course and their exact date is announced in MOODLE

Student workload

To obtain the degree, 90% participation in laboratory exercises, contact teaching and supervision, etc. is required.

The student's workload is 27 h / ECTS, which includes contact teaching and the student's independent work.
The scope of studies and the workload of exercises are sized according to full-time studies.
To obtain the degree, all course assignments must be completed satisfactorily.

All assignments and assignments must be completed before the end of the course. If they are late, a grade reduction will be applied.

Content scheduling

At the beginning there is total station measurement and at the end there are other measurement methods for infrastructure construction.

Further information

TEACHING METHODS
During theory classes, the teacher lectures in front of the class and writes notes and calculation exercises to be written down on the board.
In the laboratory, students work in groups by doing practical exercises with measuring devices, emphasizing total station measurements and calculation exercises for future practical tasks.

ASSESSMENT METHODS
The course is assessed based on measurement exercises and a written theory exam, as well as class knowledge. The total station test must be completed within the maximum time limit and within the given accuracy tolerances.

The mutual weighting of the tests for the grade:
- 50%, Theory test
- 50%, Total station test

This course is implemented at school as contact teaching and small group work, which is presented in the MPAK020 class.

The student's assessment is based on his/her performance during the course. In addition to the tests, these include, among others, class activity, attendance and small group work with presentations. Attendance should be at least 90%.

We will visit the premises of infrastructure construction importers or they will come to the school to demonstrate the functions of measuring equipment and systems.

The average grade for the exam and small group work is not directly the grade for the course, but the above-mentioned factors that lower the grade are taken into account.

If necessary, see Metropolia's extensive student and study register privacy statement (which can be found in My: Privacy statement: Metropolia's student and study data register) regarding the processing of personal data related to distance learning and the systems, software, IT applications and electronic tools used in the processing of personal data.

Evaluation scale

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The assessment focuses on the student’s work during the course as well as the acquired skills at the end of the course.
Weighting of exams:
- 50%: theoretical exam
- 50%: use test of the total station.

Satisfactory (1-2)
The student knows the basics of the different aspects of total station and GPS measurements and load measurement that BIM and machine control. The student is required to complete the use test of the total station in the given maximum time and within the given precision tolerance.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student masters most of the different aspects of total station and GPS measurements and load measurement that BIM and machine control. The student is required to complete the use test of the total station within the average value of the minimum and maximum time limits and within the given precision tolerance.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student has a versatile competence in the different aspects of total station and GPS measurements and load measurement that BIM and machine control. The student is required to complete the use test of the total station within the minimum time and the given precision tolerance.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The assessment focuses on the student’s work during the course as well as the acquired skills at the end of the course.
Weighting of exams:
- 50%: theoretical exam
- 50%: use test of the total station.

Satisfactory (1-2)
The student knows the basics of the different aspects of total station and GPS measurements and load measurement that BIM and machine control. The student is required to complete the use test of the total station in the given maximum time and within the given precision tolerance.

Assessment methods and criteria

Continuous assessment
Tachometer usage test
Theory test

Small group work assessment, which examines how well the student has become familiar with the given topic area in their group.
Exercise assessment, which examines how well the student has internalized the content of the material covered in the lectures and understands the general areas of infrasound. The main points to note are the consideration of sustainable development principles in the general areas of infrasound, familiarity with the different areas of infrasound, consideration of the areas and concepts of infrasound, and the processes and different actors of infrasound projects.

Qualifications

No

Further information

The course involves laboratory work in groups, including practical measurement exercises with measuring equipment, with emphasis on measurements with different variety of total stations and GPS devices, as well as a variety of related calculation exercises.
The laboratory provides also capacity measurements with the measurement equipment.

No literature is required. The material consists of the contents of the theory sessions and the student’s notes.
In the laboratory, the teaching material consists of different measuring devices, notes and instructions written on the board, and exercises done with the measuring devices.

For the laboratory sessions you should dress according to the weather and prepare to be outdoors for up to one hour. In heavy rain we do not do outdoor measurements.
However, cold weather is not an obstacle to surveying, so dress according to the weather!
