Objective

After completing the course, the student can compute internal structural stresses and deformations using fundamental theories. They understand strength properties of materials and concepts related to stresses and strength. They know basic concepts of structural mechanics, such as rod tension, compression and torsion, beam bending, rod forces in trusses and rod buckling. The student can compute normal and shear stresses of a statically determined bent beam and deflections of simple beam structures. They know the basics of cross-sectional quantities. They know dimensioning principles of structures.

Content

Basic assumptions of strength of materials and mechanical properties of materials
Cross-sectional stresses in a rod: tension/compression, shear, bending, torsion
Elastic deformations and displacements: tension/compression Thermal expansion
Beam bending lines and stress patterns without numerical values and calculations
Deflection of a simple beam with tables
Principle of beam dimensioning
Rod forces in trusses
Euler's buckling theory
Dimensioning of a compressed rod against buckling
Basics of torsion
Utilization of suitable computer software in checking the results of manual calculations
