Objective

Students master the stage engineering systems and their properties, potential uses, operational principles and special requirements of the systems. Students know the procedures and requirements involved in safe rigging and lifting and they are able to rig and lift safely in a work group. They are able to comprehend the work process involved with the stage. The students understand stage technology as a part of live performance production and understand the job requirements in the field. Students are aware of the inherent safety risks regarding the systems in stage engineering.

Content

- Stage engineering equipment, systems and the operating principles
- Safe execution of rigging and lifting
- The work process in stage technology
- Safety risks and practices involved in the systems

Location and time

January-April 2025. The course will be taught partly by distance learning in Zoom and partly on the Arabia campus. There will also be 1-2 visits to theatres.

Materials

Course materials will be distributed on the Classroom platform at the beginning of the course.

Teaching methods

Contact teaching online (Zoom)
Contact learning on campus
Visits (1-2) to performance venues
Independent assignments and group work on the online platform (Google Classroom)

Employer connections

Lectures and workshops by expert teachers, visits to workplaces.

Exam schedules

No exam. The deadlines for returning assignments follow the timetable of the teaching sessions. All assignments must be returned by 8.5.2025.

Partial grades are valid for one year from the start of the course. Similarly, the last date for the return of any separately agreed grid assignments is one year after the start of the course.

International connections

Visiting lecture by an international expert.

Completion alternatives

Must be agreed with teacher of the course unit

Student workload

Contact teaching sessions and visits 36h
Assignments and work in Classroom 64h
- Assignments for each module 24h
- Main assignment 40 h

Content scheduling

More information about specialist lecturers is given in first session.

Further information

The course requires at least 80% attendance. The procedure for replacing the absence is agreed with the teacher in charge of the course unit. The schedule of the course can be found in Lukkari. Further information about the workshops in the course can be found in a separate document. All parts of the course must be completed successfully.

The contact teaching sessions of the implementation will be recorded in e.g. Microsoft Stream for use by the students via Moodle and Google Classroom platforms. The recordings will be kept for up to 2 years. If students do not wish to participate in the recordings, they should contact the teacher responsible for the course.

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student knows general stage systems properties and some ways to control stage systems. He/she is able to identify risks involved in rigging and lifting. The student is able to take part in rigging or lifting work safely as a team member. The student understands stage technology as a part of live performance production and understands the job requirements in the field. The student follows safety regulations. The student finds relevant information and utilizes it in practice.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student understands stage systems and their properties and common ways to control stage systems. He/she is able to identify risks involved in rigging and lifting. The student is able to independently rig or lift safely. The student understands stage technology as a part of live performance production and understands the job requirements in the field. The student follows safety regulations. The student independently seeks relevant information and utilizes it in practice.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student understands stage systems and their properties and common ways to control stage systems. Assessment methods and criteria

Independent main assignment 60 %
Lesson-specific assingments 40%

By returning the online exam or online assignment, students confirm that their demonstration of competence is based on independent work and ethical behaviour. Failure to do so may result in suspension from the UAS for up to one year. Act on Universities of Applied Sciences 932/2014, Section 38. In order to ensure the independent demonstration of competence in online learning, the teacher may, at his/her discretion, require the demonstration of competence under supervised conditions or by means of an oral examination. The teacher will inform the student of the method of demonstrating competence at the latest at the beginning of the course.
