Periodontology I (5 ECTS)

Objective

- recognises the instruments, materials and equipment of periodontal treatment, and uses them safely
- is able to plan, implement and assess the stages of periodontal treatment in a simulation in a skills exercise room and clinically in a peer-learning group at the oral hygiene teaching clinic
- plans and implements a peer student's clinical oral hygiene treatment and assesses its outcome
- organises their work economically and ecologically and works according to the occupational safety instructions

- understand the basic aetiology of illnesses at the cellular level, and structural changes associated with illnesses
- understands the general principles of healing

Further information

Students confirm their place in the course by being present at the beginning of the lesson or in any other way agreed with the teacher in advance. If the student is unable to attend the start of the course due to illness, he/she can also confirm his/her place by informing the teacher in advance.

1. Attendance requirement
2. Approved performance in the skills workshop is a prerequisite for the teaching clinic placement (peer teaching).
2. The dental studies and the "from oral self-care to clinical oral care" placement must be completed with approval before the peer teaching.
3. The peer teaching placement must be completed during the implementation in order for the student to progress to the next clinical placement.

The class begins with a theory section followed by the practice sessions. Classes start at 8.30 a.m. when everyone must be present. You will not be able to participate in the skills workshop if you have not attended the theory lecture and/or the demo (late arrivals please note).

In case of sudden absences due to illness, students are obliged to find out the content of the absences on their own, through the materials and by interviewing their fellow students. Students will practice the exercises they have done during their absence in between other exercises.

Accepted performance requires active attendance and participation in all parts of the course. Assignments must be returned by the due date. Learning assignments returned late will result in a lower grade for the course.
Attendance is compulsory for all lessons of the course.

Failure to pass an examination or failure to pass an examination below the pass mark will be taken into account in the calculation of the grade point average, so that a failing grade will be equivalent to a grade of 0. If the performance is rejected due to technical problems such as network outage, power failure or equipment failure, the performance will be considered as failed and will count as 0 in the grade point average.

If a student has an individual teaching arrangement decision that affects the completion of a course, the student should contact the student's course instructor immediately after the registration deadline.

The use of artificial intelligence in the course of study is subject to separate instructions. Students must familiarize themselves with the Metropolia AI guidelines and follow them in their coursework.

Teaching may possibly be recorded by the teacher. Students' consent will be sought on a case-by-case basis.
