Objective

The student is able to apply the basics of biomechanics to human functional capacity and its evaluation. The student can describe the importance of balance as part of functional capacity. The student
• is able to describe the different stages of the gait cycle, the motions and muscular activity that take place during these stages and the gait variables of time and distance
• is able to observe gait visually and to use various methods for evaluating motion, movement, motion control and balance
• recognises and is able to observe common changes in gait and movement
• is familiar with the different stages of running and the basics of evaluating running
• knows the basics of energy consumption as part of the evaluation of functional capacity
• is able to utilise evaluation data in clinical decision-making.

Content

• Application of biomechanics in the evaluation of movement
• Basics of walking and running and their evaluation
• Muscular functioning and movements of the joints in the different stages of the gait cycle
• Observing gait
• Methods of evaluating movement and motion using various measurement devices and technology
• Interpreting measurement results
• Common gait abnormalities
• Balance as part of human functional capacity
• Evaluating balance
