Objective

Students learn about the profession of a textile conservator; the tasks and the working and operating environments.

Content

- The role of the conservator in the preservation of cultural heritage
- Students will learn about the tools, materials and their characteristics commonly used in textile conservation
- Traditional decorative textiles from the past
- Introduction to the profession of textile conservator through small-scale practical work
- Students will produce a padded clothes tree and a display stand for textiles
- Textile conservation
- Damage to textiles - causes and prevention of damage
- Students will learn about the conservation of Finnish rug and other textiles through theoretical lectures

Location and time

Opetus järjestetään Arabian kampuksella 4.6.-12.6. välisenä aikana klo 10-16.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student has many absences. Activity in lectures and assignments is low. The student's teamwork skills need to be improved. The student is able to grasp the basic ideas of the topic, but problem solving and the application of theory in practice need improvement. The work has not been independent and there has been a strong need for further guidance. The overall result shows that the course should be better studied, as the learning outcome is fragmented. There is much room for improvement in the knowledge and skills of the student.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student has hardly any absences. Activity in lectures and assignments is good and group work goes well. Work on the course progresses in a coherent way. The student has a good grasp of the basic ideas of the subject and is able to apply the theoretical studies in practical work. The student understands the relevance of the subjects to the profession and the cause and effect relationships. Work has been sufficiently independent, but there has also been a need for guidance. The student has mastered the task and has achieved a good level of knowledge and skills.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The objectives set for the course have been achieved to a commendable degree. The student has participated actively and constructively in the teaching and has acted as a team member in a supportive and reinforcing way. The student has an excellent grasp of the subjects taught and is able to apply what he/she has learned in accordance with the requirements of his/her profession. The student understands and is able to anticipate the cause and effect relationships of activities related to the subjects taught in his/her professional field. Work has been sufficiently independent. The student has a good command of the whole, both in theory and in practice. The student has achieved an excellent level of knowledge and skills.

Luennoille ja opetukseen osallistuminen, annettujen käytännön harjoitustöiden tekeminen ja siihen kuuluvan kirjallisen osuuden palauttaminen arvioitavaksi. Itsearviointi. Arviointi asteikolla: tyydyttävä (1-2), hyvä (3-4), kiitettävä (5).

Further information

The course is delivered as project-based learning. The starting point is work and learning through work. The students themselves play the role of investigative learners.
