Objective

After completing the course, the student will be familiar with his/her physical and social learning environment, the requirements and rules of higher education. The student recognizes what internationality means in his/her field as well as opportunities for international exchange and training. He/she is able to outline the job opportunities in his/her field and the contents of his/her degree. The student is able to evaluate his/her learning, his/herself as a learner and his/her own strengths as a student. He/she can set goals and make study plans for his/her studies.The student is able to write basic texts in his/her field, communicate in his/her field and apply language recommendations. The student is able to use essential office tools. The student knows the social significance of the construction industry, key companies, organizations and actors and importance of sustainable development in construction.

Content

• Orientation to the learning environment and the learning field, requirements and rules for higher education, degree regulations, curriculum, personal study plan (PSP) and credit transfer, the key learning outcomes of the degree program, developing one's own learning capacity and University of Applied Sciences study tools.
• Higher education services, internationality, well-being services, library services, student organizations.
• Technical language usage recommendations. Report as a form of communication and text: structure and layout of a report. Word processing and presentations.
• Construction in society. Company visits and trade fairs. Key organizations in the field. Occupational Safety and Health. Sustainable development in Construction.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student knows how to operate in Metropolia's learning environments in accordance with its policies, rules and guidelines. The student recognize his/her own strengths as a learner and knows what systematic study means. The student knows the study tools related to his/her own studies and learns how to use them. The student takes part in field-specific events. The student become familiar with the key players in the Real Estate and Construction industry, their fields of activity, and the basic rules and guidelines. The student knows the terminology of his/her field, how to obtain information and is able to prepare documents according to given instructions and models as well as apply language recommendations. The student understands the importance of sustainable development in construction.
