Objective

The student is able to find, choose and utilize music versatilely in different professional activities and situations, responding to different needs. The ability to recognize musical phenomena and their historical continuum beyond musical genres, and the ability to connect these phenomena to current topics, enhances the student’s professional growth into an active future operator. The student improves their historical thinking, criticism of sources, co-operative skills and knowledge of musical repertoire, as well as their verbal expression and argumentation skills in interactive situations.

Content

Musical phenomena, such as timbre and sound, rhythm and musical time, structure and perception, performance and listening, and the examination of their change in both the past and the present. Analysing the trends of musical change in different times and genres.

Location and time

Between 15 January and 15 May 2023 in the Metropolia Moodle learning platform. A remote course introduction in Zoom on Monday 15 January at 10.00–11.00 EET (Finland). The Zoom address will be given later.

Materials

The material will be given during the course in the Metropolia Moodle and consists of videos, music examples of different genres, webpages, databases, and other study material.

Teaching methods

Online implementation in English. Begins on 15 January 2024 with a course introduction in Zoom, lasts until 15 May 2024. This course consists of listening and reflective (written) assignments, discussion forums, and self-evaluation assignments. The student is expected to attend two concerts of their choice. The learning platform is Metropolia Moodle.

Student workload

The assignments have been designed with the general model of 1 credit = 27 hours of work. The student is recommended to block time in their weekly timetable for the assignments. When finishing in time, individual progress is possible.

Further information

The class supervisor will send detailed information about the implementation in the Metropolia Moodle platform for all the enrolled by email in January at the start of the course.

The student feedback will be followed in the self-evaluation assignments throughout the course and it will be collected more extensively in the final evaluation assignments of the whole course.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student can recognize the central trends and phenomena of musical change, and utilize musical heritage creatively in their own professional activities. The student can follow set schedules, argue and justify their own opinions in interactive situations, and find new perspectives from the presentations of others.

Assessment methods and criteria

The course is passed when all the assignments, including discussions and self-evaluations are done according to the instructions.
