Objective

The student is familiar with the mechanisms of damage to gilded and other surface - decorated objects, including paintings frames or mirror frames, is able to identify surface decoration and surface treatment materials and other materials of the object that are essential in choosing of conservation materials and methods.
The student is able to independently document the materials and damages of the object and perform ethically and aesthetically acceptable conservation and restoration procedures for the object.

Content

Cleaning of gilded and otherwise surface-decorated objects, including painting´s and mirror frames, fabrication of missing decorative elements using various materials and techniques, filling, and various methods of surface restoration / retouching, including restoration of gilded and silver-plated surfaces with original methods.
Documentation of objects visually and in writing. Required material analyses of the object and their interpretations.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student is able to understand the basic concepts of conservation of gilded and surface decorated objects and knows at a basic level the related theory, documentation, materials, analysis methods and conservation methods. The student handles the basics of the course and understands the main content of the course. The student understands the necessary theoretical and applied principles related to the topic. The student is able to acquire some information independently. The student has difficulties in interpreting the acquired information and knowledge and choosing suitable working methods and materials. The student has difficulty justifying the choices made. Practical work is not independent enough and there are shortcomings in the end-result. The student has difficulty acting as a group member in an encouraging and group-strengthening way.

The student understands well the concept of the conservation of gilded and surface decorated objects and is well acquainted with the related theory, documentation, materials, analysis methods and conservation methods. The student demonstrates a good theoretical and applied knowledge. The student is expertly able to justify the choices he / she has made on the basis of the documentation and material analysis of the subject, and the application in practice proceeds consistently in accordance with the practices of the professional field. The student masters well the whole in both theory and practice and has achieved a good level of knowledge and skills. The end-result of the practical work is of a good standard. The practical work has been sufficiently independent and the end-result is at a good level. The student is able to acquire information independently and is able to critically analyse this information.

The student masters the concepts of conservation of gilded and surface decorated objects and is well acquainted with the related theory, documentation, materials, methods of analysis and conservation methods. The student has achieved an excellent level of knowledge and skills. The student demonstrates excellent knowledge of theoretical and applied knowledge and is able to apply what he or she has learned well. The student is able to work largely independently on both written and skill-based assignments. The student is able to acquire information independently, based on object documentation and material analysis, as well as to analyse and apply obtained information. The student participates in the discussion with arguments using the concepts of the field. The student is expertly able to justify the choices he / she has made and the application in practice proceeds consistently in accordance with the practices of the professional field. The result of the practical work is of a very good standard. The student works consistently, showing initiative and creative problem-solving ability.
