Objective

- The student will understand the main features of the history of European art and culture.
- The student will know trends in art history and the production of key artists.
- The student will understand the connections between the features of the art and culture of her/his own time and earlier art and cultural history.
- The student will be able to evaluate her/his own professional activities in relation to the cultural history and the art history.
- The student will be able to critically evaluate and search for information about the art history.
- The student will have an understanding of the use and development of different materials in different periods of history.

Content

- Outline the history of western art
- The main trends and actors in art
- The relationship of art to social and economic development and to the general history of ideas and culture.
- Contextualization of cultural and art phenomena
- Historical development of materials
- Source materials

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student has a lot of absences from the teaching sessions. Activity during the teaching sessions and learning assignments is unsatisfactory. The student is able to understand the main features of the art history and the historical continuum. The student knows the basics of the course and understands the main content of the course. At a basic level, the student knows the materials and stylistic features of art and knows how to place works and objects in the right context at a basic level. The student is capable of independent information acquisition.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student has taken part to all teaching sessions and learning assignments and the activity during the course is good. The student has a good grasp of the basic ideas and concepts of the subject of the course. The student is able to understand the main features of the history of art and the historical continuum. The student knows the basics of the course and understands the main content of the course, the student knows the materials, techniques and stylistic features of art and knows how to place works and objects in the right context, The student controls the whole and has reached a good level in her/his knowledge and skills. Working has been sufficiently independent. The student is capable of independent information acquisition and can critically analyze this information.

The course objectives have been achieved in a competent manner. The student has participated actively and constructively in the teaching and learning assignments. The student masters the subject and has reached an excellent level in her/his knowledge and skills. The student knows the main features of art history and the historical continuum. The student knows the basic s of the course and understands the main content of the course. The student knows the materials, techniques and stylistic features of art and knows how to place works and objects in the right context. The student shows excellent knowledge of theoretical and applied knowledge and knows how to apply what she/he has learned well. The student is capable of extensive independent work in both written and skill-based assignments. The student is capable of independent information acquisition and analysis and application of information.

The course is implemented as a project-based learning. The starting point is learning through practical work. Student her-/himself has a role as an investigative learner.
