Objective

On completion of the course, the student will be able to participate in communication in familiar everyday situations and work environments. His/her language skills will be sufficient to handle quite a wide range of routine tasks. He/she will be able to understand the main points in ordinary texts and also conclude details from the context. The student will be able to write short descriptions, messages and very simple job application documents. He/she masters the basic everyday vocabulary, structures, some idiomatic expressions and the most common means to create cohesion in the text. The student’s communication skills will correspond to the skill level A2.1-A2.2 as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Content

- oral and written communication in everyday contexts: education and working life, celebrations and customs, running errands, information about Finnish culture and society
- new grammatical structures, for example using tenses and passive voice, expressing hypothetical and imaginary matters, plural forms of nouns and adjectives, comparison
- key characteristics of formal and informal style and structures characteristic of written language

The student is able to
- cope with simple communication situations in everyday life and at work
- understand the main points and some details in ordinary texts
- write short texts and messages related to everyday life, and a very simple CV
- identify some features of formal and informal style.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student is able to
- deal with routine tasks and participate in communication of everyday life and at work
- understand the main points and several details in texts of everyday life
- compose understandable texts, messages and descriptions about familiar topics and write a very simple CV and job application
- use the language in formal and informal style following given instructions
- apply his/her language skills in freetime, study and work related situations following given instructions.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student is able to
- participate in the communication of different kinds of groups and in working life with some support of the communication partner
- understand many types of texts concerning the everyday life even when the topic is not related to his/her immediate environment
- compose understandable texts, messages, and descriptions related to everyday life, and a simple CV and job application
- use the language in formal and informal style to some extent
- apply his/her language skills in freetime, study and work related situations.
