Objective
On completion of the course the student is familiar with the basic concepts of general, inorganic and physical chemistry as well as physical regularities, understands their meaning and can apply this knowledge in the professional field.
The student will know the origin and production of common building materials.
The student will know products and how they are used, installed and maintained.
The student knows the physical and chemical quality of different materials. The student knows how to combine different materials.
The student is able to compare material qualities and evaluate suitability of the materials for different uses.
The student is able to search for, process and share information with others.
Content
1. Chemical bonding and principles of compound formation
2. Oxidation-reduction reactions
3. Naming compounds
4. Calculations related to chemical reactions and chemical energy changes
5. Solubility, solutions and calculating concentration
6. Acid-base reactions, calculation of pH and neutralisation reactions.
7. Safe handling of chemical substances, TVATM, and interpreting operational safety bulletins
Basic knowledge of wood, concrete, steel, glass, brick, light concrete, lime stone, aluminium, copper and plastics, and coating materials such as plasters, paints and lacks. Basics of physical and chemical properties of these materials.
