On completion of the course the student can
- explain the most important definitions of renovation, the process flow for repair work, and the difference between renovation and new construction
- list building materials and structures from different time periods
- explain the importance of protecting buildings to preserve architectural heritage and list existing methods for doing this
- list the contents of renovation plans
- determine condition assessment methods for buildings and estimate the timing of assessments of a building during the repair process
- list typical damages, defects and their causes in buildings from different time periods
- name different methods for condition assessment and repair of concrete, wood, rendered and brick structures
- list demolition techniques for repair work
- list harmful and hazardous substances as well as building materials in older buildings and their demolition techniques
- list corrosion protection methods for reinforced concrete structures
- list causes for moisture and mould damage in structures and methods of investigating such damages and repairing them
- list typical indoor air problems and their causes as well as methods for investigating them and repairing them

Materials
The learning materials, including lecture handouts, will be published in Oma after the lectures. The lecture handouts are part of the exam content. Additionally, the exam content includes the textbooks and other materials specified separately in Oma
Teaching methods
The first lecture will be on August 27, 2024. In the first lecture, essential aspects related to the course requirements will be discussed. The lectures will be conducted in person, but a Zoom link (https://metropolia.zoom.us/j/2340620028) is also available for remote participation. The course includes three mandatory assignments and an exam. Two of the assignments are group projects that will be presented in a seminar. Additionally, the course includes one independent written assignment. The course platform used will be Metropolia's Oma workspace.

Exam schedules
The exam will be held on November 26, 2024, from 9 AM to 12 PM. The first retake will be two weeks later on December 10, 2024, from 9 AM to 12 PM. The second retake will be held in January, with the exact time to be announced later.

Assessment methods and criteria
Exam. The assignments will be graded as pass/fail. To complete the course, you must successfully complete all three assignments, pass the exam, and actively participate in the lectures.
