Objective

On completion of the study course, the student
- Understands what marketing is, why is it needed, and of which elements it consists of
- Understands the operational environment of marketing efforts
- Masters the basic concepts in the field of marketing
- Masters the basics of productizing, branding and digital marketing
- Is able to apply the received knowledge to the homework of the course
- Is able to recognize aspects and deeds of marketing in everyday life situations
- Understands the basic functions of a company eg. the importance of strategy, the main principles of leadership, budgeting, pricing and accounting.

Content

This study course introduces the basic concepts of marketing in an inspiring way, and opens up many aspects, for what reasons and how it is done both in private and public sector. The content consists of presentations and video speeches of representatives from work life – a CEO of a media agency, a brand manager from the Association of Finnish Work and a digital marketing specialist of a B2B communication agency. Related exercises and assignments enhance the learning process of a student. The basics of business consist of an introduction to strategy, leadership, budgeting, pricing, and cost accounting.

Students have achieved the course objectives fairly. Students will be able to identify, define and use the course subject area’s central concepts, models and is able to utilize the most common tools. The student understands the criteria and principles of the expertise development.

Students have achieved the course objectives well, even though the knowledge and skills need improvement in some areas. Students know the course concepts and models well and are able to justify their decisions. The students are capable in applying their knowledge in new situations. The student understands the importance of expertise in the field of business and is able to analyse his/her own expertise and areas requiring further development.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students have achieved the objectives of the course with excellent marks. Students master commendably the course subject area’s concepts, models and tools. Students are capable in making justified and fluent analysis and to present concrete development measures. The students are well prepared to apply their knowledge in new situations. Students are mature to analyse the business sector expertise and the evolvement of their own expertise in graphic arts.
