Objective

Student
- know how to plan, implement and evaluate maternity care in accordance with national regulations, recommendations and evidence-based knowledge
- are able to work as experts of maternity care in the multi-actor collaboration of maternity care
- know how to apply their guidance and counselling competence to the health promotion of pregnant women and families with a newborn baby
- can implement breastfeeding guidance in accordance with the WHO Baby Friendly Initiative

Content

- regular health check-ups based on the national recommendations on maternity care
- the main laws and decrees on maternity care
- follow up and screening methods of maternity care
- promotion of health and wellbeing of the expecting mother and family
- identifying problems during pregnancy requiring supplementary follow up and multiprofessional cooperation
- irregular childbirth, alleviation of pain during childbirth and unplanned out-of-hospital childbirth
- postnatal examination of normal childbirth
- screenings of cervical and breast cancers
- Breastfeeding counselling training course based on the WHO Baby Friendly Initiative
- medical studies: obstetrics, gynaecology, prenatal diagnostic testing

Further information

Students can choose to study professional studies of public health nursing after they have successfully completed the theoretical studies included in the professional nursing studies and at least the clinical practices in medical and surgical operating environments , unless otherwise agreed in the student's HOPS.

The student confirms his/her place in the course by attending the orientation. If the student is unable to attend the orientatio, the teacher must be informed in advance.

Attendance is compulsory for the face-to-face courses, maternity nursing laboratories and simulations of the breastfeeding counselling training.

The breastfeeding counsellor training must be passed before the Public Health Nursing of Pregnancy and Birth – Clinical Practice.

Course feedback is collected on the implementation of the course, which is an important element in the development of teaching and practice. By providing feedback, you have the opportunity to influence the content of the courses and the development of the teaching. Feedback enables teachers to improve their own implementation and teaching methods for other courses. Giving constructive feedback will also develop your own work-life skills. Course feedback is given anonymously and the person giving the feedback cannot be identified.

Breastfeeding counselling: attendance, active participation at the simulation and proficiency test.

Maternity Care exam evaluated 1-5

Physicians lectures: attendance

The grade of the course will be determined according to the maternity care exam.

Prerequisites

The student may choose professional studies of public health nursing after successfully completing the theoretical requirements of professional nursing studies as well as all the clinical practices in medical and surgical operating environments, unless otherwise agreed in the student's PSP.
