Objective

Knowledge and understanding:
Students will learn some basic concepts and algorithms of Digital Image Processing.

Skills:
Students will be able to get some skills in how to improve the quality of the given images and to get information of features from the images.

Practice and Lab work:
Students will understand the basic concepts of image processing through making some programs. Students will be able to make some programs for some specific purposes.

Content

1. Introduction to the Image processing software called HALCON.
2. Some basic intensity transformation functions
3. Some basic morphological Algorithms
4. Color image processing
5. Some applications

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

Students know concepts of the difference between the images and the regions.
Students can understand some basic ideas of morphology.
Students can know the difference between the color images and the monochrome images.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

Students can understand some algorithms for the Intensity transformation functions.
Students can understand some basic morphology programming.
Students can know how to treat the color images.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

Students can understand and explain some algorithms for the Intensity transformation functions.
Students can understand and build some basic morphology programs.
Students can understand and explain the applications of color image processing.

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

Students know concepts of the difference between the images and the regions.
Students can understand some basic ideas of morphology.
Students can know the difference between the color images and the monochrome images.

Assessment methods and criteria

Active attendance at all sessions.
Completing practical exercises.

Qualifications

Students must bring their own laptop PC with Windows OS. The image processing software called Halcon will be installed on the students’ PCs. It is preferable to have basic programming skills in C or other programming languages, data structures and algorithms.
