Objective

Students
- understand ageing as a social and societal phenomenon as well as the impact of age policies on the lives of the elderly
- understand ageing as a phase of life and can describe the changes and their meaning to the lives of the elderly
- are familiar with the most common diseases and health risks of old age
- know how to apply the multi-scientific, evidence-based knowledge foundation of gerontological nursing to practice
- identify the ethical principles of gerontological nursing and are able to evaluate their significance to the promotion of good life as well as the value foundation of their work
-can apply the ethical decision-making process to gerontological nursing
-understand how memory diseases affect the human life and identify the special needs required in encountering persons with a memory disease
-identify and support the resources of persons with a memory disease
-understand the holistic promotion of functional capacity and human agency of the elderly as well as their connection to the operating environment
- can evaluate the nutritional status of patients and identify patients suffering from malnutrition

- promotion of health and wellbeing of the elderly
- main health risks, illnesses and their treatment in old age
- cooperation with relatives and significant others
- maintenance and evaluation of resources and functional capacity of the elderly
- planning care and services for the elderly
- old age and operating environments
- tests measuring nutritional status and their interpretation and application to care
- utilization of gerotechnology

Orientation on campus. Pls see timing in OMA schedule. Orientation is mandatory, and being present in the orientation you confirm your participation in this course. Drug calculation and re-takes as informed on the calendar.

Exam schedules

4 ects of the course is independent online studying. In the Moodle online course the student plans the schedule of his / her performance. Studying requires self-direction and time management skills.

The RPL decision document must be made before the start of the course and must be presented to the responsible teacher prior to commencement of the course.

Student workload

The scope of the course is 5 ECTS cr = 135 hours of student's work. 1 ECTS cr = 27 hours of student's work. 135 hours are equal to 3.3 working weeks of continuous studying (40 h/week). 4 ECTS are independent online work according to your own schedule.

Content scheduling

Beginning of the course
· You can log in to Moodle on the first day of course (more information in the orientation lesson).
- The recommended sequence of content is announced in orientation and in Moodle. The student can mainly schedule his studies by himself.
· The student completes 4credits of the course online, so completing the course requires good time management and the ability to work independently.
- 1 ects part of the course includes planning, implementation, and evaluation of the Multicultural meeting point cafe in HyMy-village in Myllypuro campus.. Each student is present at the event once (total duration of the event including organizing and closing the event max. 6 hours). The dates will be announced later.

· Independent assignments in all parts of the course: Pass / Fail
· Written plan of the HyMy-village event: Pass / Fail
- Drug calculation exam: Pass / Fail
· Geriatrics online-exam: 0/1-5
· Gerontological nursing online-exam: 0/1-5

The final course grade is the average of both exams: Gerontological nursing end Geriatrics. The exam grade on the Gerontological nursing exam is emphasized with 2 and the exam grade on the Geriatrics exam is emphasized with 1.

The evaluation criteria for the different sections are explained in the orientation.

Qualifications

Basics of Clinical Nursing Competence.
Basic knowledge of Pharmacotherapy.
