Tavoitteet

International communication is becoming more important in the international globalised world. Nevertheless the engineering education has traditionally focused on the technical skills rather than on personal development. However, the personal competence is becoming more and more important, including the communications skills. One of the challenges in modern engineering education is the ability to focus on both the technical and personal development in order to educate an engineer who can solve both technical and humanistic problems; thus creating good results from an all-round prospect. This International Communication Course is an introduction to communication and will demand an active involvement of the student.

The student who has followed the course will:
• Learn how to communicate in a positive and constructive way.
• Learn to communicate verbally and non-verbally.
• Learn how to improve network skills.
• Learn about different contact forms.
• Learn about conflict resolution.
• Become aware of his/her own personal communication skills.

Esitietovaatimukset

No previously knowledge is necessary for this course.

The student has to read the learning material in advance and do a small assignment before entering the course. The student has to start writing an assignment showing reflection and understanding of the using of the theory in the learning material. The student needs to give a detailed answer for each question not just one line.

This course will use the upside down principle, which means that the student has to read and prepare him/herself BEFORE the course, since the course is based on the students being actively involved in interactive exercises during the course. Very little traditional teaching will occur – only short 5-10 minutes presentations.

It is important that the student makes a proper preparation for the course in order to get the full benefit and be able to share knowledge with the fellow students.
