On completion of the course the student knows
- methods of open excavation
- explosives and detonators used in excavation work
- tunnel excavation methods
- rock reinforcement and sealing methods
- the core elements of blasting and excavation work order instructions
- how rock cutting vibration progresses and its impact on the environment
- crushing methods
- the basics of occupational safety considerations.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

On completion of the course the student
- can choose the appropriate method of excavation, explosives and detonators for different sites
- can select and justify the injection and bolting methods suitable for a variety of rock structures
- knows the core elements of blasting and excavation work order instructions
- can explain the progress of rock cutting vibration, its impact on the environment and ways to dampen vibration
- can explain the phases of planning and implementing crushing work
- can produce a safety plan for a site with guidance.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

On completion of the course the student
- can choose the appropriate method of excavation, explosives and detonators for different sites
- can select and justify the injection and bolting methods suitable for a variety of rock structures
- knows the core elements of blasting and excavation work order instructions
- can explain the progress of rock cutting vibration, its impact on the environment and ways to dampen vibration
- can explain the phases of planning and implementing crushing work, and their impact on the quality of the end product
- can produce a safety plan for a site.
