Objective
Students know the role of media and journalism as a social power. They know key mechanisms relating to the production and reception of media representations. They know the main theories related to the relationship of media and society. They know structures, activities and economical significance of media institutions as well as their relations to other institutions in society, and are able to assess critically the activities of the media. Students are capable of perceiving the social dimensions of their professional practice.

The grading will take place in Autumn 2023 according to following deadline dates: 31 August, 30, September, 30 November, 31 December 2023. The assignments returned before each deadline will be graded within 4 work weeks after each deadline date. In case of November and December returns, the grading may take place in the beginning of year 2024. The grading date will be last Friday of the month when the assingment is returned, except December, when the grading date is the last day of semester. No re-exam possibility after the last deadline.

The students are to get acquainted with the course materials and do the assingments during summer and autumn 2023. Students have acceptable participation in class and complete the assignments to a satisfactory standard. The students know concepts related to the production and reception of media representations, and to the relationship between the media and society. They have a general understanding of how the media institutions work and how they are related to the society. They can recognize connections between their professional activities and society at large.

Students actively participate in class and complete the assignments to a good standard. The students have a versatile knowledge of the concepts and theories related to the production and reception of media representations, and to the relationship between the media and society. They are familiar with the strutctures, activities and economy of the media institutions, and with their relationship to the society. They can assess the social significance of their professional activities, as well as changes in their professional environment.

Students actively participate in class and complete the assignments to an excellent standard. They have a comprehensive mastery of the concepts and theories related to the production and reception of media representations, and to the relationship between the media and society. They can excellently assess the social significance of their professional activities, as well as changes in their professional environment.
