Objective

The student will adopt both theoretical and practical skills for using analytical methods and she/he will learn to benefit from these in his/her studies and later in the working life.
The student knows the principles of formation and structure of organic compounds. He/she is able to name and draw organic compounds and understands the fundamentals of organic reactions.

Content

Acid-base equilibria, pH, buffer solutions
2. Gravimetric analysis
3. Titrimetric analysis (acid-base-, complexometric -, precipitation-, redox- and potentiometric titrations)
4. Structure and nomenclature of organic compounds

5. Fundamentals of organic reactions and reaction mechanism

Materials

e-kirja Analyyttisen kemian osuudessa: Daniel C. Harris: "Quantitative Chemical Analysis" (10. painos)

Teaching methods

Luennot ja aktivoivat tehtävät (analyyttisessä kemiassa Achieve-verkkotehtävät)

Exam schedules

Analyyttisen kemian lopputentti (Mian osuus) pidetään ma 11.12.2023 klo 10-11.30.

Kaksi uusintatenttiä pidetään kevätlukukaudella 2024. Ajankohdat ilmoitetaan myöhemmin.

Evaluation scale

0-5

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

The student
1. knows how to prepare different chemical solutions
2. knows the principles of gravimetric analysis
3. knows titrations based on different reaction types and is able to calculate the amount of analyte in the sample after sample treatment and based on the direct titration.
4. reports the results with the right number of significant figures
5. knows the principles of the structure and nomenclature of organic compounds.
6. knows the different reaction types and the fundamentals of reaction mechanism.

Assessment criteria, good (3)

The student:
1. understands the solution equilibria
2. understands the importance of different factors in doing gravimetric analyses.
3. understands the more complex analytical processes such as the back-and indirect titrations. The student is able to determine titration end points with the first and second derivate.
4. understands how the structure affects the properties of an organic compound and is able to name organic compounds.
5. understands how the different compounds react and the fundamentals of reaction mechanism.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

The student:
1. is able to calculate the buffer solution equilibrium calculations and prepare buffer solutions without further instructions.
2. is able to apply the theory and practice of gravimetric analysis
3. understands the solution equilibria and the theoretical basis of the analysis. The student knows the factors that influence the success of the analysis.
4. is able to name polyfuctional organic compounds.
5. is able to explain with the reaction type and reaction mechanism a reaction product

Assessment criteria, approved/failed

The student
1. knows how to prepare different chemical solutions
2. knows the principles of gravimetric analysis
3. knows titrations based on different reaction types and is able to calculate the amount of analyte in the sample after sample treatment and based on the direct titration.
4. reports the results with the right number of significant figures
5. knows the principles of the structure and nomenclature of organic compounds.
6. knows the different reaction types and the fundamentals of reaction mechanism.

Assessment methods and criteria

Painotus: Analyyttinen kemia (Mia) 60%, Orgaaninen kemia 40%

Analyyttinen kemia:
- Liuoslaskutentissä kaikki tehtävät pitää olla oikein (pidetään yksi uusinta)
- Lopputentin painoarvo on 50 %
- Achieve-tehtävien painoarvo on 50% (50-60% parhaasta pistetuloksesta: 1, 60-70 % parhaasta pistetuloksesta: 2,...90-100 % parhaasta pistetuloksesta: 5)
