Objective

After completion of the course the student understands the concept of chemical reaction equilibrium and is able to conduct equilibrium calculations on the concentration scale related to general reversible reactions, weak acids and bases and dissolution-deposition reactions. He/she is also able to apply the ideal gas law, understands the basic principles of reaction heats and calculation of reaction enthalpies. He/she has also carried out a few laboratory exercises in basic chemistry.

Content

1. States of matter: application of the ideal gas law.
2. Basics of thermochemistry.
3. Chemical reaction:
- oxidation and reduction
- stoichiometry of oxidation-reduction reactions
- reversible reactions => the concept of chemical equilibrium
- the principle of Le Chatelier
- calculation of chemical equilibria
4. Deepening the concepts of acids and bases:
- calculation of the pH of weak acids and bases
- neutralization.
5. Dissolution and deposition: calculations based on the concepts of equilibrium
6. Introduction to analytical chemistry: experimental uncertainty, the most important analytical techniques.
7. Laboratory exercises such as oxidation-reduction titration, extraction, precipitation, electrolysis

Evaluation scale

0-5
