Objective

The student is familiar with the environmental and safety management subject matters in his/her professional subject field and the related legislation. Students know the principles of environmental and chemical legislation at EU and national level. Students are able to search for information in different rules and legislations. Students understand the process of environmental permit procedures and environmental impact assessment. The student understands the need for authorization and the related procedures for industrial handling of chemicals.
Student knows the design principles of a safe installation and is able to make a risk analysis. The student will know the national and EU regulations controlling products, installations, waste water effluents and volatile organic compound emissions. The student knows best available technology, is able to minimize the amount of waste and knows the relevant treatment techniques.
Students know tools and techniques for controlling and preventing solid, liquid and gaseous emissions.

Content

1. Recognizing harmful properties of the products.
2. Principles of risk evaluation
3. Regulations in materials and surface engineering.
4. Environmental and chemical legislation at EU and national level. Emission monitoring and measurement principles. Process of environmental permit procedures and environmental impact assessment. The principle of the best available technology and emission reduction and monitoring practices.
5. Best available technologies, waste minimization and treatment techniques.
6. Waste legislation, the national waste plan and other waste legislation. Principles of sustainable development and technology.
7. Solid, liquid and gaseous emission prevention methods.

Assessment criteria, satisfactory (1)

1. The student is able to identify the harmful constituents of chemicals and can list their harmful properties.
2. The student is able to find the relevant regulations and is able to combine them into the matters on environmental and chemical permit applications and permit conditions.
3. The student is able to name the essential waste minimization methods and necessary waste treatment techniques.
4. The student is able to find the reference data for best available technologies and can justify his/hers selections with the help of the data

Assessment criteria, good (3)

1. The student is able to name the harmful constituents of chemicals and can categorize them according to their harmful properties.
2. The student is able to apply the relevant regulations into the matters on environmental and chemical license applications and license conditions.
3. The student is able to choose the essential waste minimization methods and waste treatment techniques.
4. The student is able to search for information and to critically evaluate and use data sources
5. The student can logically and coherently use concepts and knowledge of his or her own field of study.

Assessment criteria, excellent (5)

1. The student is able to classify chemicals according to their harmful properties.
2. The student is able to evaluate the need for permits and plan the necessary applications.
3. The student is able to plan the essential waste minimization methods and waste treatment techniques.
4. The student is able to demonstrate good knowledge basis and applies it in practice
